- I will not drop the DMM from a height of 4 feet.
- I will not Test Live Powered equipment in the Ohms Mode.
- I shall not Measure Mains Voltage in The Current Mode.
- I shall get it calibrated once a year or at least once a decade.
- I shall not use it in High Energy Measurements.
- I will try my best not to give it to my best friend.
- I can remember Red is Positive and Black is negative.
- I will wear shoes and stand on a block of wood while i test.
- I shall not operate the rotary range switch at high speeds.
- I shall replace the probes-cables-connectors on wear-tear.
- I shall not accidentally keep the hot-iron near the DMM or leads.
- I shall not keep DMM on tall table and pull it with the leads.
How To Learn Electronics :
Theory must be studied once and referred to, again and again as you do practicals. One is by building DIY projects and then modifying them. Also Repair of equipment, troubleshooting, testing and calibrating. Then you know how components behave and real life limitations. Now design and engineer a product and test it at customer site. do a pilot production and test with more clients. Now you will learn to think based on practical applications.

This was a Student Project of mine, it is a very basic instruments that could do most of the tasks on a test bench.
The cabinet used, was available as a part of a Hi-Fi DIY System, The Range and Mode switches were Modular Stackable Interlocked MultiPole Switches. The rest of the Interface were wirewound pots, jacks, sockets and plugs. The front panel was Engraved Acrylic, the panel was the toughest issue we tackled.
I wanted it to look well engineered, at least on the outside. It was a total analog instrument except for the digital indication of ICL7107. Thanks to 'Intersil Hot Ideas' Applications Book.

A negative voltage is derived by shifting gnd with two diodes, i feel this did not work very well. Two pins of CD4028 pins are also used to boost the reference to get two extra ranges as 4051 has a 100E on resistance.
The 555 clock makes 4029 counter count. But the clock can be clamped to gnd by a TL062 window comparator. The clock is frozen when the input value to comparator pin 5-2 is within a lower limit and upper limit "window" pin 3-6.
The 4029 counter BCD is decoded to decimal by 4028 which drives the LEDs, keep LED drive within 3mA or chip will be loaded. Use high efficiency extra-bright LEDs.
The 4029 BCD also controls a shunt resistor array with CMOS switches 4051. The voltage across shunt is a sample of leakage current. This is compared in the window comparator to freeze the Clock and LED display to give a reading of the leakage current or Insulation Resistance.

Analog Dial AVO Amps-Volts-Ohms meter
This was designed, keeping in mind, that sometimes we have few components available and we could be flat broke. Even that you could not carry your DMM somewhere, but you have to make some instrument for a quick need with what is available. If you are out of cash or feel like Robinson Crusoe, then this is a low cost measurement system.
How they used to measure with Precision before the advent of new technologies..... See the Instrument above. If you can afford it, buy it as a Lab God. Something you can worship before every new project. Its Presence itself will make you bow a few times before this "Stupendous Excellence". What Dignity and Bearing at this age, they don't make this kinda things no more.

It would be better like a Mains Supply wiring, 230/110 all houses have a 24V DC Bus for LED and Solar and small appliances on power failure. There is no point stepping down and then stepping up the power. The combined efficiency may become like 60%.

Zelscope Sound card oscilloscope
Zelscope features the interface of a traditional oscilloscope, with conventional gain, offset, timebase, and trigger controls. As a real-time spectrum analyzer, Zelscope can display the amplitude and phase components of the spectrum.
The typical input voltage should be about 1 volt AC at the line-in jack of the sound card, so a voltage divider or a buffer amplifier is highly recommended.
