Troubleshooting Audio Electronics
I ain't gonna lie. You won't be a master troubleshooter after reading a couple pages here. Hopefully, what I can do is give you the ability to form a logical plan of attack.

Troubleshooting is done mostly with the mind, not with the soldering iron. We all have problems that get the better of us, at least for a while, but approaching the situation as an interesting puzzle, rather than an unpleasant task to be suffered through, will make the work go quickly.

 Success will come from a 3-prong approach, a combination of understanding the circuit, having the means to test it and being in the right frame of mind to correctly interpret the test data. Never underestimate that third component.

Simple Water operated relay

This was done in my early days, i have upgraded it, it ought to work, reduce the number of transistors to make it less sensitive, also a lower value in place of 10M will reduce its sensitivity, use clamping diodes to protect.

BD139 is used to drive the relay as it has good Ic. So you can even use a low ohm relay. If a Relay resistance is high its quality is higher, its power consumption is less and it needs thinner wire SWG-AWG. T2 and T3 form a darlington pair which drives T1. LED1 shows that the water level has reached the top of tank and also that the Relay is energised. D1 a freewheeling diode. R3 10M ensures that the high gain input does not float, yet the low leakage current thru the water is not drawn away by the 10M. R2 limits base current in case water is saline.

LM317 based Regulated Power Supply

This is a Regulated Power Supply based on the LM317 IC. It will need a Boost Power Transistor and heatsink for higher currents. It is a versatile building block for stable instrumentation supplies. Consumer Electronic gadgets can use a SMPS chip. In case you wish to use a SMPS for a Precision Instrumentation Block, then take extreme care on Shielding and EMI-RFI.

LM317 based Regulated Power Supply

This is a General Purpose Chip, Series Regulation. It can be varied or trimmed. There is an Internal temperature compensated reference. The minimum trim value is around 1.2. In case you want a Low value voltage like 0.5 with a good current, then use a good negative supply to offset the 1.2 V.

The transformer can be s Split Bobbin with Pri-Sec copper shield foil.  This can be earthed along with the metal enclosure. C4 sends any hi-freq components to earth.  It is better if you do not earth the ground but use such capacitors. A Supply should simulate a a battery with both ends floating wrt Earth. A option to eartth the ground is fine. This also helps the user to configure his own dual supplies.

Q1 and R5 form a Short Circuit OR current fold back OR constant current mechanism. TP1 can be used to vary the output voltage.  Better use something like a Bourns 10T trimpot. An open preset may introduce a noise due to dust and vibration. I don’t remember why i added a zener DZ1, a diode may suffice.

The LM324 is the Heart or Intelligence in this Circuit. There is a voltage divider and zener too. They have a kit and pcb to buy and build .

Important

A battery of a car can drive enormous amount of current, anything that is High-Voltage, High-Current or High-Frequency or a combination of these; are known to be high energy circuits. So as a precaution when you wire the positive to the car battery use an automobile fuse with holder like the one used outside the stereo player. The fuse has to be outside!

You could also use a fusible resistor in a metal box and keep it outside, the 12V positive has to go thru this. Any car/boat project needs this. A short circuit on PCB or Wire will blow fuse and everybody is safe.

A High humidity like 90% is seen after a Rainfall, A low Humidity like 25% means dry days. A humidity of around 50% is healthy, above that Bugs and Fungus trouble. Less that 40% cause skin and breathing irritations. 60% is comfortable for us and  most equipment. High humidity can cause trouble to unprotected electronics.

The DMM or Digital Multi Meter

  1. I will not drop the DMM from a height of 4 feet.
  2. I will not Test Live Powered equipment in the Ohms Mode.
  3. I shall not Measure Mains Voltage in The Current Mode.
  4. I shall get it calibrated once a year or at least once a decade.
  5. I shall not use it in High Energy Measurements.
  6. I will try my best not to give it to my best friend.
  7. I can remember Red is Positive and Black is negative.
  8. I will wear shoes and stand on a block of wood while i test.
  9. I shall not operate the rotary range switch at high speeds.
  10. I shall replace the probes-cables-connectors on wear-tear.
  11. I shall not accidentally keep the hot-iron near the DMM or leads.
  12. I shall not keep DMM on tall table and pull it with the leads.

How To Learn Electronics :

Theory must be studied once and referred to, again and again as you do practicals. One is by building DIY projects and then modifying them. Also Repair of equipment, troubleshooting, testing and calibrating. Then you know how components behave and real life limitations. Now design and engineer a product and test it at customer site. do a pilot production and test with more clients. Now you will learn to think based on practical applications.

He was an American Mathematician and Electrical Engineer. He fostered the development of alternating current that made possible the expansion of the electric power industry in the United States, formulating mathematical theories for engineers.

Shortly after arriving in the U.S., Steinmetz went to work for Rudolf Eickemeyer in Yonkers, New York, and published in the field of magnetic hysteresis, which gave him world-wide professional recognition.

Eickemeyer's firm developed transformers for use in the transmission of electrical power among many other mechanical and electrical devices. In 1893 Eickemeyer's company, along with all of its patents and designs, was bought by the newly formed General Electric Company, where he quickly became known as the engineering wizard in GE's engineering community.

My Notes-

I read about  Steinmetz long ago in a Reader Digest that belonged to my grandfather. It was dated like 1950-60. These issues have become brown and have been ruled by silverfishes.

I cannot find that article but i remember it roughly ......

People from/related to GE had problems with thier electrical equipment heating up a lot. Then they heard of this person of Germany who had mentioned about some remedy to such issues.

They visited him in his loft or some upstairs room where the solution to this problem was discussed and the rest is remarkable history for Electrical Engineering. 

The part of the story i remember most was that in one of his wardrobe drawers, a Mama Mouse had made it her home and was also having her kids here. Not only did the compassionate Steinmetz allowed it to keep her quarters, he even attended to the new family with some food and necessities.

Heard of very few angels like this.

gEDA Project - Electronic Design Automation tools

The gEDA project has produced and continues working on a full GPL'd suite of Electronic Design Automation tools. These tools are used for electrical circuit design, schematic capture, simulation, prototyping, and production. Currently, the gEDA project offers a mature suite of free software applications for electronics design, including schematic capture, attribute management, bill of materials (BOM) generation, netlisting into over 20 netlist formats, analog and digital simulation, and printed circuit board (PCB) layout.

The board is 2.75 inches by 6.5 inches in size; mounting four .8 inch LED displays and two .56 inch displays as well as six individual LEDs, a 7805, the MAX7219, and a five pin header.

Experiments with the LM2575

The standard buck regulator circuit delivers a +5V output. This is a rather straightforward circuit and will operate with a wide spread of component values. Optimal values should be selected however to get minimal ripple, minimal noise to the power source, maximum efficiency etc. Note that the quiesent current is about 10 to 14mA.

Here is a nice way of using this regulator, this can be used for CMOS opamps as you have a -5V too. That means a portable instrument may find this design useful.

It is a nice 4.5 desktop digit meter, but a typical problem seems to be that the LCD wears out and goes black. Replacement LCD displays are hard to find, not cheap and probably lead to similar problems in due time."
