usbtiny - Software USB implementation

USBtiny is a software implementation of the USB low-speed protocol for the Atmel ATtiny microcontrollers. Of course, it will also work on the ATmega series. The software is written for an AVR clocked at 12 MHz. At this frequency, each bit on the USB bus takes 8 clock cycles, and with a lot of trickery, it is possible to decode and encode the USB waveforms by software.

Connecting the Easy-Downloader V2.0 to a PC with USB port:

Newer PC, or laptop computer may not provides the COM port, instead it has the USB port as a standard serial port. I found a cheap adapter, the FTDI232 USB-COM port converter. The adapter uses FT232RL chip. The adapter provides 6-pins connector. To interface it to the Easy-downloader, we needs only three pins, i.e. TXD, RXD, and GND. The chip itself powered by +5V from USB port.

The Atmel AT89S52 is an 8051 based Full Static CMOS controller with Three-Level Program Memory Lock, 32 I/O lines, 3 Timers/Counters, 8 Interrupts Sources, Watchdog Timer, 2 DPTRs, 8K Flash Memory, 256 Bytes On-chip RAM.

AT89S52 - 8 bit Microcontroller

Compatible with the industry-standard 80C51 instruction set and pinout. The on-chip Flash allows the program  memory to be reprogrammed in-system or by a conventional nonvolatile memory programmer.

Dave's Sumo Robot project

The following is my Computer Science project Comp490 and Comp492 in progress. It is a SUMO robot for our local RoboWar tournament. I have been, for the pass two years a participant of the annual RoboWar competition. So, this year I've decided to try to get credit for doing it.

There are two class of robots, remote controlled and autonomous. Remote controlled are operated by a human participant via RF link. Autonomous on the other hand has to be self contained with no human influence in its operations with the exception to its programming.

Arduino Interfacing with Visual Basic

Arduino is a QuickStart Embedded system, very useful in learning both the hardware and software elements of a system.

From what i understand, the developed app can be burned into the device fully, no additional layer of OS or Firmware needed, It is all built in. In short the compiled binary can be either a stand-alone firmware(OS) or be a layer running over a Mobile OS.

BeagleBot - Beagle powered robot

"For measuring distances I chose to use SRF08. It is an ultrasonic ranger with I2C bus and measure range from 3 cm to 6 m. The sensor has a beam width of 55 degrees (-6 dB points) and when mounted on top of one of the servos it can be used for covering well over 180 degrees."

Servo System -Double Hitec HS-422 servos mounted on a special two axis brackets. - 5 pcs of normal RC servos with 50 Hz PWM control. ATMega16 at the expansion board creates the PWM for all of the servos and provides an I2C control interface for them. User space application running on beagle board can thus control the servos just sending only a simple I2C message.

Miniature micropower motion detector module uses a digital pyroelectric infrared sensor to detect a moving human or animal, operates on 4 to 15 volts and can directly drive a LED or relay. This module can be used with a FL40 or FL65 Fresnel lens or other types of lens.

The SBC ECBOT is composed of a 200MHz ARM9 processor (Atmel AT91RM9200) and Spartan3 FPGA family from Xilinx, supports the implementation of the Linux operating system.

Reuse Wireless Keyboard and Mouse

Many people give up on Wireless Keyboard Mouse Combo after a few months of "Novelty". This is due to the chore of replacing batteries and also the cost and wastage (carbon foot).

Then i have long been suggesting, nineties, ferrite smps coupled charger docks. This is like RFID, but more like RF power transfer. One half of Ferrite E-Core is in the Gadget and the other half is in the Dock. When the Gadget is docked it is sensed and power transfer just like in SMPS. Rechargeable batteries in the gadget.

Reuse Wireless Keyboard and Mouse

How-To Convert Wireless to Pseudo-Wired 

Now you got a Wireless Combo, it can be converted into wired yet wireless, it is simple the wires will now carry 3V power to the Keyboard and Mouse, so no batteries. A little gentle and smart drilling is needed for the Mouse.

Get a 5V Adapter, the ones used for charging phones and music players. If you cannot get 5V use a 7805 to derive a 5V from 6 or 9. Use two 1N4007 in series on the positive line to drop 1.5V - test out with a dummy load of 10K and 100uF cap. Now use this to power both the mouse and keyboard with thin dual-core wires leading to the battery terminals. Soldering this may be a delicate job. Now you got a Perpetual Wired Keyboard Mouse Combo. The Interface still remains Wireless.

Another way is use Rechargeable Batteries for both. The wires will carry exactly a regulated 3.3V from a LM317 circuit which can be tweaked. The Mains adapter can be any 6V or 9V raw DC. You can have a Connector for the power wires when you want it to be wire free. This may require greater Gadget Opening and Drilling Expertise.

Reuse - Be Earth Friendly - Keep your Carbon Footprint smaller than that of a Yeti.

For the blower motor (robbed from a defect hair dryer) a simple logic level N-FET (IRL540N) has been used. The chassis is from a cheap RC car illumninated with red, white and blue LEDs. As power supply 3 AA cells for the drive motors are used. A 9V battery block has been used for the blower motor and the 5V regulated controller supply

This certainly is a good project for college students. You can also enhance it for multiple channels, mini thermal printer interface.

Stand alone remote data loggers must be able to take a Standard Thumb Drive for storing and easy retrieval of data. In urban areas a wireless internet transfer is better. In a desert or jungle a satellite data transfer or small flash storage, that can be manually collected and logged into network.

Measureall Workbench Test Instrument

This was a Student Project of mine, it is a very basic instruments that could do most of the tasks on a test bench.

The cabinet used, was available as a part of a Hi-Fi DIY System, The Range and Mode switches were Modular Stackable Interlocked MultiPole Switches. The rest of the Interface were wirewound pots, jacks, sockets and plugs. The front panel was Engraved Acrylic, the panel was the toughest issue we tackled.

I wanted it to look well engineered, at least on the outside. It was a total analog instrument except for the digital indication of ICL7107. Thanks to 'Intersil Hot Ideas' Applications Book.

555 based Reset Generator

You must have read all the circuits and explanation on the other pages at delabs to understand this, as i cannot repeat the same thing as i have done it more than once already.

The circuit is a 555 monostable, The push-switch is to trigger and generate a reset pulse for uC. The diode is for OR' ing later. The High will go thru the diode but the Low of 555 cannot drink any current as diode blocks.

The bottom part of the Circuit is the CD4093 Schmitt nand based flipflop. This is my favorite because of studying designs in Elektor Electronics.

What is the Schmitt then ?, It is better to visit the links below to learn. It can make a sine or triangle or any shape waveform to square. It can help square a very messy waveform.

Two nand gates are connected to form a flip-flop toggle switch. When 555 gives out a pulse, the pulse is delayed by a R-C which results in a ramp, the third nand-Schmitt gives out delayed low trigger to toggle nand-flipflop-switch. The Nand-toggle-switch is rest at any time with the lower pushbutton. The fourth nand output gate is not really required. But the 4093 is quad nand, so unused nand inputs should not float , pull-up or pull-down. So it has just been added in circuit so that he can fit some role, or else he will be bored.

Now you can figure out how such blocks can be used like Lego blocks in your own amazing designs.

This supply gives both positive and negative outputs. Appropriate Fuses should be used to protect from fire hazard and overload of transformer.

The Filter capacitor C1 4700uF has an impedance of Xc = 1 / (2 * 3.14 * f * C) which comes to 0.6 ohms at 50 Hz. The impedance of the load at 2A for 24V is R = V / I that is 12 Ohms which is more than 20 times the impedance of the capacitor at 50 Hz. That means less than 1 / 20 of ripple current will flow thru the load. The Regulator also reduces the ripple a little.

If workers can wear a coat of sensors with force feedback actuators, they can control a semi-automatic robot in Real-Time. This enables a worker to navigate a robot into a hazardous environment, perform an upgrade or make repairs. An accident or mishap will damage the robot and it can be easily rebuilt or maintained.

The robot is automatic and will have reflexes defined by software. The wireless networking will connect the Robot mechanically to a human in a safe enclosure. This makes the Worker present virtually inside the Robot, because he is connected by optical, aural and mechanical-muscle feedback-sensors. This will create Virtual Anthropomorphic Robots for Industrial use and may help to finally develop Fuzzy Robots or Androids, which is still in the relm of science fiction.
